Visitors and residents can get a seagull's view of Ventnor and it's unique cliff-side topography aboard the Ventnor-built Cheetah Marine Catamaran, Blue Safari. The trip goes out to St. Catherine's Point, renowned as a wrecking coast and smugglers haunt, and pauses along the way to haul some lobster pots as Skipper Lucy Strevens explains the legal size regulations and allows a hands-on experience to trippers. Finally an exciting fast ride back to the Haven.
Visitors to Newport Quay could walk the extra hundred yards to find a collection of extraordinary boats from the past in the Classic Boats Museum, which hosts up to 60 veteran craft and dozens of marine artefacts lovingly cared for by a group of volunteers. There’s some military history there, since you will find the one remaining airborne lifeboat designed by the Island’s own Uffa Fox in WW2, as well as a Marine Commando canoe once used in active service.
That's not all! Visit them to see past elegance as well as practical boats, many of which were built or designed here on the Island.
Our cameras were out on Ventnor seafront to film the spectacle of hundreds of yachts taking part in the 2009 Round the Island Race. Sponsored by JP Morgan Asset Management, and organised by the Island Sailing club, this race is the largest of its kind in the world.
The first race was in 1931 and it has gone from strength to strength ever since. This year 1779 entrants started from Cowes early on Saturday 20th June sailing westwards towards The Needles.
By midday the main fleet had begun to make it round the south of the Island and had started to stream past Ventnor sea front. It was the from the esplanade and haven that we shot these stunning pictures. For more info: www.roundtheisland.org.uk
